Headshot or Portrait: What’s the difference & how to choose
What’s the deal? Aren’t headshots the same as portraits?
Nope, they’re pretty different from one another. Here’s how, and how you should choose.
Headshots
Headshots are a close-up photo focused on your face—shoulders and up—with the subject looking directly into the camera. They help introduce you to clients, and communicate something to them—approachability, experience, trustworthiness. They’re ideal to use places like your LinkedIn profile, your resume, or your company website, or if you’re an actor or model, for your audition.
Portraits
Portraits are all about the story. They help capture your personality and tell a story. You’ll notice these on your favorite author’s book covers. Sometimes, they include props & instruments for storytelling, and often more dramatic use of light and shadow.
